Contemplative - Active Norbertine Sisters

The Norbertine Sisters of Wilmington are one of the branches on the family tree of the Norbertine Order which lives according to the age-old inspiration of St. Norbert (1080-1134) and the Rule of St. Augustine. Besides our apostolic active community, there is also a community of Contemplative cloistered Norbertine Sisters in Tehachapi, as well as Norbertine Priests at St. Michael’s Abbey in Silverado Canyon.

Our community in Wilmington was founded in 2011 by the General House of the Congregation of Norbertine Sisters in Slovakia. The Congregation was originally founded in 1902 in the Czech Republic by Fr. Vojtech Frejka, a Norbertine Father from the abbey of Strahov in Prague, to renew the Norbertine way of life in the region. In the spirit of St. Norbert, the Congregation has sought to

maintain a balance between liturgical prayer, zeal for souls and the contemplative spirit.

As Norbertines, we are not bound to any specific apostolate, but in the spirit of St. Norbert, we are prepared for every good work.  Our life is centered around daily Mass, praying the divine office, and Eucharistic holy hour. We strive for unity of mind and heart which overflows into a love that embraces all people. We humbly implore the Virgin Mary to teach us to be completely devoted to God and to serve His people with total dedication.

Here in Wilmington, we serve the Church and the people by helping needy families by operating a Poverty program, teaching at SS. Peter and Paul school, working in the bookstore, helping in the sacristy, and teaching Catechism and Confirmation classes.

At present time we have three Sisters from Slovakia: Sr. Adriana  Gacikova, Sr. Roberta Sprlakova and Sr. Benedikta Hornikova . Our convent is also the formation house. There are two novices: Maritza Giles and Anna Rogers and two postulants: Rosalina Rios and Hanna Hugoboom.
